The Health Sciences Instruction and Research (HSIR) complex includes two large high-rise research laboratory towers on the Parnassus Heights Campus. Each building is fully occupied and operational during normal working hours. A primary goal for the project is to complete the needed scopes of work while minimizing disturbances to the occupants. The towers, designated as Health Sciences East (HSE), floors 1-16, and Health Sciences West (HSW), floors 2-16, each has a stair and mechanical tower, connect to a central elevator tower with support services. The elevator core also connects to the Medical Sciences Building on every floor. The building complex was constructed in 1966 and provides approximately 440,000 gross-square-foot of laboratory spaces, lecture halls and other support spaces to the University.
