The project was won as a standalone project for Webcor Concrete, which poured nine floors for the building that will house low to moderate-income families, along with families and transitional-age youth who have experienced homelessness. It fronts the historical commercial Haight Street and the residential Waller Street and is situated at the entry to Golden Gate Park. Cahill broke ground last June.
"Thirty workers were on the project at its peak," says Concrete Sr. Superintendent Sergio Valencia Loya. "We're down to about 15 now and should be done before the end of the month."
The 160-apartment building was designed by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), an international firm. It was the firm's first 100-percent affordable housing project in the U.S. The project is a joint venture effort by Chinatown Community Development Center and Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation, in partnerhsip with the Mayor's Office of Housing and community Development.
The ground floor will be occupied by a cafe or restaurant.
In addition to the barbecue lunch, the topping out celebration featured live music. "That had everyone dancing," says Sergio.
